3. Technological progress is very much an invisible layer that generates the same result as the previous layer of technology. This is because the end target is the same.  It is us, humans.  We do not evolve as fast as technology does.  The purpose of technology has been to deliver our needs.  The final product that technology creates must be in a form that we can sense and interact with.

1. If you follow developments on the internet you would have heard of Web 2.0 and how the internet is going to rapidly evolve into something we barely recognize today with all types of new software tools and gadgets.

2. But take a step back in history.    The first ever printed book was the Gutenburg Bible published in 1452.  It is a book comprised of text and pictures.  More than 550 years later modern books are virtually no different.  They are still a combination of text and images.  In fact the most popular paperbacks are mainly just text except for the elaborate image on the cover.  Nothing has visibly changed in over 500 years.

The same could be said of the motor car.  After over a 100 years of technological development they are still 4 seats in a chassis with a steering wheel and 4 wheels touching the ground.  The use of a personal computer has barely changed since the introduction of Windows.  We still sit in front of a screen with a mouse and keyboard moving and clicking on visual icons.

4. When designing a web site always concentrate on how it interacts with people first.  Do not allow technological web toys distract you from that primary goal.
